Destination Imagination

Destination Imagination is an after school program that Mechanicsville Elementary School has been offering for the past eight years. We start meeting in October and the program runs to late spring. The students compete against schools across the state of Maryland. One of the amazing parts of this program is that the students get to choose the challenge they would like to compete in. In the past years they have competed in improv, engineering, and fine arts. The program started off at MES for students in third to fifth grade, however these past few years we have extended it to first and second graders. The first and second graders are part of a special challenge called Rising Stars. The students meet once a week after school to plan for their challenge, make props, and design their own structures. This year's groups are designing roller coasters that have to carry a golf ball on a track and creating improv skits. Mechanicsville teams have competed on the regional, state, and global levels over the past eight years. We are excited to see what our groups this year design and share at the state level.
